Liens sociaux, initiatives collectives et processus conflictuels; le cas des mobilisations contre la gentrification à Parc-Extension, Montréal.

This article, published in Recherches sociographiques, focuses on the micro-level processes in community organizations which can both help or hinder mobilization and the capacity to gain concessions from elites. Using ethnographic methods on two community housing groups in Montréal, we find that the creation of collective identity, emotional energy and the maintenance of social infrastructures are integral in maintaining movement unity, cohesion, avoiding burnout and more.

English Abstract:

Our article seeks to analyze the links between social ties, collective initiatives and conflictual processes by focusing on two main fronts. We first examine the relational dimension of collective initiatives, by paying attention to three concepts which can help us to understand the processes leading to the formation, reproduction and transformation of social ties. We then take into account the involvement of collective initiatives in social conflict, to complement the focus on cooperation that characterizes many research projects on these initiatives. We combine these two fronts by analyzing the mobilizations for the right to housing occurring between 2019 and 2021 in the Montreal neighbourhood of Parc-Extension, based on ethnographic research conducted during that period with two local community organizations. Our analysis leads us to argue that collective initiatives can both contribute to social reproduction in a given environment, respond to collective needs and aspirations and increase the capacity for popular intervention in conflictual processes which aim, among other things, to destabilize economic and political elites in order to obtain concessions.

Notre article vise à analyser les rapports entre les liens sociaux, les initiatives collectives et les processus conflictuels à partir de deux axes principaux. Nous examinons d’abord la dimension relationnelle des initiatives collectives, en nous penchant sur trois concepts qui peuvent nous aider à saisir les processus menant à la formation, la reproduction et la transformation des liens sociaux. Nous prenons ensuite en compte la participation des initiatives collectives à des conflits sociaux, afin de complémenter l’accent mis sur la coopération dans plusieurs travaux portant sur ces initiatives. Nous croisons ces deux axes en analysant les mobilisations pour le droit au logement menées entre 2019 et 2021 dans le quartier montréalais de Parc-Extension, à partir d’une ethnographie menée durant cette période avec deux organismes communautaires locaux. Notre analyse nous mène à soutenir que les initiatives collectives peuvent à la fois contribuer à la reproduction sociale dans un environnement donné, répondre à des besoins et à des aspirations collectives et augmenter la capacité d’intervention populaire au sein de processus conflictuels qui visent, entre autres, à déstabiliser les élites économiques et politiques et à obtenir des concessions.
